Rohini Chawla’s in-laws are inflexibly vegetarian. No meat, no fish, no eggs. For a strapping lady brought up on a no-nonsense army diet, courtesy her Colonel dad, it’s quite sapping on the morale front. So, on the pretext of the Delhi Ladies Circle weekly lunch, Rohini goes AWOL every Tuesday, stealing away to the bylanes around the Old City, with son and co-conspirator, little Laddu Chawla. They revel in the forbidden delights of the Haleem, an unapologetically meaty affair, before heading home to the unsuspecting in-laws. Laddu is the perfect wingman on these utterly clandestine adventures, and such a promising future foodie.
